Francis Harry Compton Crick

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1962 was awarded jointly to Francis Harry Compton Crick, James Dewey Watson and Maurice Hugh Frederick Wilkins "for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids and its significance for information transfer in living material".

Birth:
Francis Harry Compton Crick was born on June 8, 1916 in North Hampton England. Francis was the oldest child of Harry Crick and Annie Elizabeth Wilkins. He had one brother named A.F. Crick who is a doctor in New Zealand.

Education:
Crick went to school at Northampton Grammar School and Mill Hill School, London. He graduated in 1938, with a degree in physics. After college he worked for E.N. Andrade, on a study of thick water. He started research for his Ph.D. but wasn't able to finish during that time because war came in 1939. During war he was a scientist for the British Admiralty, he mostly worked on explosive devices. Crick left the Admiralty in 1947 to study Biology. Crick went to Cambridge, and got his P.h.D. in 1954.

Science:
In 1951 Crick became friends with James D. Watson. Crick and Watson focused on DNA. They were trying to figure out how DNA worked. They figured DNA out by building a structure of it. Their first try was in 1951 this structure didn't turn out so well. but their second try in 1953 won a Nobel Prize!

Genes:
Part of DNA tells how a person got his/her looks. Everyone gets their looks from their parents. These looks can also be called genes. Genes is short for genetics. Genes tell what type of hair, or eye, or even skin color should be. Those aren't the only things that a gene can tell. A gene can tell what ear, mouth, all sorts of traits that you wouldn't imagine. You get all of your genes from your parents.
